MESSRS. COODE, FITZMAURICE, WILSON AND MITCHELL
Gentlemen,
49
TO THE CROWN AGENTS.
9, Victoria Street,
London, S.7. 1.
23rd March, 1927.
HONG KONG HARBOUR.
We have to acknowledge the receipt of your letter
E.254/11, dated 23rd March, and marked "Urgent" with
enclosure
2. We have looked into the matters referred to,
so far as the short time at our disposal has admitted,
and have to observe as follows:-
3. It appears from the telegram from the Governor
of Hong Kong, that it is proposed to obtain 2,000,000
cubic yards of material still required for the completion
of the Kaitak reclamation by means of dredging from the
Harbour, and that the Netherlands Harbour Works Company
have undertaken to carry out this work for the sum of
Dollars 1,491,000. We understand that the value of the
dollar may be taken at 2/-, so that the cost of the work
may be roughly taken at £150,000 which would represent
1/6d. a cube yard on the 2,000,000 cube yards referred
to. Assuming that this price includes the deposit of
the dredgings in the reclamations, and that the quantity
is ascertained by measurement of the material when
actually deposited, the price appears to us very
reasonable. No contractor sending plant out specially
from Europe for the purpose could undertake it at such
a low figure.
4. With regard to the Netherlands Harbour Works
Company itself, we have no personal knowledge of this
firm.
